# About OpenBullion

## Building the open precious metals ecosystem

OpenBullion's mission is to develop an accessible, transparent [precious metal](https://docs.openbullion.com/knowledge/definitions/precious-metals)-backed ecosystem that levels the financial playing field and democratizes the world's best [money](https://docs.openbullion.com/knowledge/definitions/money).

## The why of OpenBullion

Since the failure of the [Bretton Woods](https://docs.openbullion.com/knowledge/events/bretton-woods-conference-of-1944) system in 1971, when [the United States removed the convertibility of dollars to gold](https://docs.openbullion.com/knowledge/events/nixon-shock-of-1971) at a rate of $35 USD/[troy oz](https://docs.openbullion.com/knowledge/definitions/precious-metals/weights/ounce) (thus removing the need to hold enough gold in reserve to cover all dollars printed), the world has experienced a **critical loss of purchasing power.** Precious metals, on the other hand, continue to **preserve purchasing power and protect against** [**monetary inflation**](https://docs.openbullion.com/knowledge/definitions/monetary-inflation). 

It's with this in mind that we start the long road of building the OpenBullion ecosystem.
